Don't they look like the forest spirits from Princess Mononoke? :)


Kodama (木魂) is a spirit from Japanese folklore, which is believed to live in certain trees (similar to the Dryad of Greek mythology). Cutting down a tree which houses a kodama is thought to bring misfortune, and such trees are often marked with shimenawa rope.

(My camera ran out of batteries when we were here, so I had to borrow a cheap one... The picture is not as sharp as I'd want to, but at least I managed to catch them in a photo. They are elusive ;))
